75th Anniversary of Government Buses

Double Decker Leyland

On Christmas Day 1932, 75 years ago, the first Government bus travelled from Flat Rock depot at Willoughby to operate a bus service between Manly Wharf and Cremorne Junction. This was the first regular Government bus service and the beginning of what is now route 144.

This service was so popular that more than 2000 passengers travelled on the first day of operation. This meant the frequency of the service was doubled the very next day - as well as the number of passengers.

Today, State Transit operates more than 1900 buses in Sydney and Newcastle carrying more than 600,000 passengers a day on more than 300 bus routes.

State Transit now operates the largest bus fleet in Australia and manages one of the largest bus operations of any city in the world.

Thank you to all those people who have worked in the world of buses and supported public transport over the years.

You can be part of the celebrations. This site will be updated with news and events, historical facts, images and downloads.

We invite you to discover our history, share in our present and shape our future.
